Android 6.0 Marshmallow pure AOSP ROM for Nexus 4 D820 / D821 Variants [How To Install]

The official Android 6.0 Marshmallow OTA update released for most of the Nexus devices such as Nexus 5, 6, 7, 9 & Nexus Player recently and there is no news that when Nexus 4 will get the latest Android OS firmware update. Thanks to vocodersm (XDA forum developer) who has unofficially released a pre-built AOSP Android Marshmallow ROM. This stock Android 6.0 custom firmware is based on Google’s AOSP (Open Source code).

Just like other custom ROMs, you’ll be required to install the Google Apps package separately on your Nexus 4. In this guide we have given the compatible Google Apps package with this Marshmallow based AOSP firmware. Keep in mind that this is a custom ROM and is still under development all of its features might not be functioning properly. If you are interested to get this latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow AOSP ROM on your Nexus 4 then go ahead and follow the guide instructions.

Install Android 6.0 Marshmallow AOSP Custom ROM on Nexus 4 D820 & D821

Note:

This guide containing the Android 6.0 Marshmallow AOSP ROM can be used only with Nexus 4 (D820 and D821) variants. Do not try to install this firmware on any other device or incorrect variant.

Pre-Requirements:

  • Take a proper backup of all your important data and settings on your Nexus 4 before proceeding to the installation guide.
  • Make sure that the latest version of a custom recovery like TWRP is already installed on your Nexus 4 which is required to install a custom ROM. You can easily download the latest TWRP from here or here.
  • Download and install Nexus 4 USB drivers on your PC.
  • The battery level of your Nexus 4 should be charged at least about 70% to prevent unexpected shutdowns while installing ROM.

Steps to Install Android 6.0 Marshmallow pure AOSP ROM on Nexus 4:

1:- First, download the Android 6.0 Marshmallow AOSP ROM and Google Apps from the above links on the desktop of your PC.

2:- Copy/paste both of the .zip files to the root folder of phone’s internal storage.

3:- Turn OFF the phone in order to boot into TWRP recovery.

4:- Turn the device ON while pressing and holding Volume Down + Power buttons altogether.

5:- While the Nexus 4 is now in the recovery mode, perform a nandroid backup (System, Data, Boot, Recovery, EFS).

6:- Once the back up is completed, go back to the main TWRP menu and tap the wipe button > select Advanced Wipe. Then select Dalvik CacheSystemData and Cache.

7:- Navigate to TWRP menu and tap on the install then Storage. Locate the Android 6.0 Marshmallow custom ROM .zip file that you have already transferred to the root folder of your phone. Begin the installation process by swiping on it

8:- Once the ROM installation is completed, flash Google Apps package by repeating the above steps on your Nexus 4.

9:- After installing ROM and Google Apps, reboot system.
