Key Functions of Side Button:
Samsung devices have two physical keys to press on located at the right side of the phone:
- Volume key
- Side key
These keys above have a similar function as any other smartphone device as the name suggests the Volume key can be pressed to adjust the phone’s volume. But the Side key, or the Power/ Bixby key, has multiple uses these can be short pressed, long pressed, or double pressed in multiple ways to access different functions.
Following are the default key functions you can use:
- Short press the Side key: Display Screen will be turned on or off
- Long press the Side key while the phone is off: Just like every phone this will turn on the phones Power
- Simultaneously short press the Side and Volume down key: Screenshots will be captured
- Long press the Side and Volume down key simultaneously while the phone is on: This will display the Power off menu
- Double press the Side key: This will launch the camera of the phone, or If you’ve already set up Bixby Voice, double pressing may open Bixby Assistant Home instead
How to Change the Function of Side Button on Samsung Galaxy S20:
Samsung Galaxy S20, S20+, and S20 Ultra all launch Samsung’s Bixby virtual assistant by default when the side button is long-pressed. Now, it is also possible to change the side button’s action so that it pulls up the power menu instead.
Steps:
Start by opening the Galaxy S20’s Settings menu. The easiest way to do this is by swiping down from the top of the phone’s display and pulling down the notification shade. From here, tap the Gear icon in the top-right corner.
Alternatively, you can swipe up from the handset’s home screen to open the app drawer. Here, you can either use the search bar at the top of the screen or swipe between panels to locate the “Settings” app.
Scroll down and then select the “Advanced Features” option.
Next, tap the “Side Key” button at the top of the list.
You can now adjust the press and hold and double-press actions. Select the “Power Off Menu” option if you want the side button to act as a traditional power button when long-pressed.
You can also modify what double-pressing the side button does. By default, just like on other Android smartphones, the action quickly launches the camera. You can change this to open Bixby or open any app installed on your Samsung Galaxy S20.
