The official Android 5.1.1 firmware was recently released by Sony for the Xperia Z/ZL smartphones. This firmware came with build version 10.7.A.0.222. So if you have upgraded your Xperia Z/ZL to this latest Android OS version then we’ve a good news for you that you can now root your Xperia phone running on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop with the modified boot images by recognized XDA member, shoey63 and install TWRP recovery to get SuperSU on your device that will enables you to access the internal file system.
Ready to root your Xperia Z or ZL? then go ahead and follow the given guide. All you’ll be required to unlock the bootloader in order to install TWRP recovery.
Note:
This guide can be used for the Xperia Z/ZL phones only. Do not try to use these instructions for any other device or incorrect. Check the model number of your phone first before proceeding to the rooting guide.

Pre-Requirements:
- Take a proper backup of all your important data and settings on your phone before going ahead to rooting guide.
- Unlock the bootloader of your Xperia phone – How To?
- Install ADB Drivers. Guide
- Download and install Sony USB drivers on your PC.
- Enable USB debugging on your Xperia phone from Settings > Developer Options and check USB Debugging option.
- The battery level of your phone must be at least about 70%.
Required Files:
Steps to Root Xperia Z and ZL and Install TWRP Recovery:
1:- Download the correct TWRP recovery and SuperSU package for your Xperia Z or ZL on the desktop of your PC from the above given links.
2:- Connect your device with the PC using its USB data cable. Select Always allow from this computer and click OK button, once a pop-up message displays.
3:- Open the folder where you have saved the TWRP recovery file and run command prompt within that folder.
4:- Switch off the phone in order to boot Xperia into Fastboot.
5:- Switch ON the device by pressing and holding Volume Up button, connect the phone to the PC using USB cable while holding the Volume Up button. The Xperia Z/ZL should be in Flash Mode and its LED light will turn blue.
6:- Type and enter the following command to check if the fastboot is working:
fastboot devices
7:- Type this command to flash TWRP recovery:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
8:- Switch off the phone to boot into recovery mode.
9:- Switch it on while pressing Power and Volume Down buttons at the same time, once you get a vibration alert, release the Power button while keep holding the Volume Down button.
10:- While the Xperia phone is in Recovery mode now, tap Install and locate the SuperSU file, select it and do a swipe to install the root package.
10:- Restart the Xperia Z/ZL by tapping on Reboot system.
Done! You’ve successfully rooted your Xperia phone with custom recovery pre-installed.
