Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 | How Does it Compare to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1?

In this guide, we will be talking about the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and how good is it compared to its predecessor. Qualcomm officially unveiled the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 at the Snapdragon Summit 2022. Android enthusiasts and users eagerly waited for its release as it was expected to bring in a lot of improvements over the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. 

The preceding chipset, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 failed to appeal to users as it had to overheat issues. Soon, Qualcomm released an updated version of the chipset, the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. It was definitely an upgrade as there were no heating issues this time and there were other minor improvements as well. With the release of the much anticipated Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, many Android users are curious about how it is different from its predecessor.

Differences Between Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 1

CPU Performance

In terms of CPU performance, the latest chipset was a big improvement as the Gen 1 processor certainly lacked in this aspect. Looking at the numbers, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 featured a Cortex-X2 core clocked at 3.0Hz, 4 Cortex-A150 cores clocked at 1.8GHz and 3 Cortex-A710 cores clocked at 2.5GHz. The chipset’s build was based on Samsung’s 4nm fabrication process, but this was not very successful as the processor used to overheat while performing regular tasks and consumed a lot of power. 

Coming to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is based on TSMC’s 4nm fabrication process. This makes it better than its predecessor as this design is more cost-efficient. There are 8 cores, one of which is a Cortex-X3 core clocked at 3.2GHz, 3 are Cortex-A510 cores clocked at 2.0GHz, and 4 of them are Cortex-A715 cores clocked at 2.8GHz.    

The TSMC fabrication process has made the chipset much more power efficient. On paper, is 40% more power efficient and also boasts a 35% improved CPU performance over the previous processor.

GPU Performance

The latest chipset has also brought major improvements to the Graphics Processing Unit. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 featured an Adreno 730 GPU, while this one comes with the Adreno 740, which is better than the Adreno 730. The Adreno 740 has 25% better overall performance, which it provides while saving up to 40% of the power used by an Adreno 730. This is good news for mobile gamers who won’t have to worry about their phone overheating while playing GPU-intensive games. 

Support has been extended to the latest UFS 3.0 storage while the forerunner supported only UFS 3.0. Apart from that, the latest processor also comes with support for LPDDR5X RAM which is clocked at 4200MHz, much better than the LPDDR5 RAM clocked in at 3200MHz which was supported by Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.

Display and Camera Support

Talking about the supported displays, it is pretty much the same for both CPUs. Both come with support for 4K at 60Hz and QHD+ at 144Hz resolutions. The only difference is that the new chipset will also support HDR vivid while the other does not. 

The camera image signal processor (IPS) is greatly improved. The camera features a Spectra Cognitive ISP. This is a hardware accelerator for computer vision. Apart from that, there are 3 18-bit ISPs. Owing to the Bokeh Engine 2, the chipset will allow devices to shoot 8K HDR videos and capture 10-bit HEIF images. 

Artificial Intelligence(AI) and Machine Learning (ML)

Lastly, there also have been improvements in the Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning segments. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 brings an upgraded design for the AI processor which makes it 4.35 times faster than the forerunner. Also, the performance will be 60% better per watt.
